Ineffective Ways to Tackle Phobias
Avoidance behaviors, safety behaviors, denial, minimalism, belittling, and excessive information seeking
Many common approaches to managing phobias can inadvertently worsen them.
When confronting phobias, many people unknowingly fall into unhelpful coping mechanisms.
For example, avoidance may seem like a safe way to manage fear but ultimately reinforces it over time. Other safety behaviours and rituals or information gathering may also provide temporary relief; however, it can increase dependency and amplify anxiety. And denial and minimisation are common pitfalls that can make the fear seem even bigger.
By recognising and acknowledging these patterns, we can adopt healthier approaches that directly address phobias.
