Step 4: Recipe for fear
Deconstructing your strategy for fear
In this video, we’re building on the progress from the earlier steps to dismantle your phobia. This step explores the different techniques outlined in the book that challenge beliefs, manipulate images, and reshape internal dialogue.
Emotions like happiness, sadness, or fear follow a specific mental recipe involving thoughts, internal dialogue, posture, breathing, etc, and the goal now is to disrupt that pattern.
Here, we examine how changing individual elements can impact your emotional state. Imagine your fear is a movie: change it to black and white, push it far away, make it tiny, or transform it into a cartoon, and it starts to lose power.
Similarly, with your internal dialogue, play with the tone, volume, and location. Make the fearful voice quieter, move it to the opposite ear, or give it a comical pitch. As you play with these elements, you begin to see your fear for what it is: a set of exaggerated thoughts that can be reframed to make them less threatening.
